I'm not really sure how to reply to comments, since there's NO THREADING OF COMMENTS and NO COMMENT NOTIFICATIONS. So... I'm going to try replying here in a new post.

Onoiki: I personally find LiveJournal easier to use than Xanga. I would say yes it's probably a little easier to use, and definitely nicer to use -- prettier interface, more handy features, etc. However, I have learned that it's rather difficult to predict what computer-shy people will find easy to use, so I can't say for sure.

Laserlawyer: I applaud your effort, but I'm going to have to reply with the following image:

WMF vulnerability

I wasn't planning to mirror LJ posts here, but now that I have a few readers I think it's worth it for this:

Last week there was a MAJOR vulnerability discovered in Windows. (It's a huge hole that has always been there and you have to wonder how nobody has found and published it before, but apparently this is the first time it's been publically known and widely-exploited.)

If all is as it's being reported, this thing is BAD. It's very hard to protect against. There aren't major viruses using it yet, but there quite likely will be soon. Your machine can be compromised and infected by whatever malware uses this exploit just by viewing an image on a website or in an email.

This affects every browser, email client, IM client, etc. on Windows. Mac users are safe.

After installing Ilfak Guilfanov's patch on several of my machines and reading the news for another day, I'm going to go ahead and recommend that you install his unofficial patch.

For more details, see these pages or ask google:

Ok, so I'm being stupid with all this "I hate Xanga" stuff. But the truth is, Xanga really is bad. Basically, Xanga is to LiveJournal what IE 3.0 is to Firefox.

Obviously I'm a little bit of a hypocrite because I just created a Xanga account. I don't hate it quite enough to boycott it completely. But rest assured, the sole purpose of this account is to infiltrate the Xanga community and preach the gospel of Good software and convert everyone to the light side of the web.
